一 | JioHotstar recently rolled out an impressive slate of originals at a grand event and among the titles that immediately sparked curiosity was Kaattaan, headlined by Vijay Sethupathi. The streamer has now released a brief but gripping video that offers the first real glimpse into the series. It is directed by M Manikandan, the acclaimed filmmaker behind Kadaisi Vivasayi and Aandavan Kattalai, and marks a much-awaited reunion between the actor and director. The short video is packed with atmosphere and intrigue. Vijay Sethupathi appears in a traditional lungi and shirt, walking with unhurried menace into a festival crowd after tossing a stone to part the sea of people. He moves toward a man, raises a sickle to his throat, and delivers a simple message that lands like a threat from a much larger world: “Shivettan sent me.” The streamer captioned the post with a tease of what lies ahead. “Every crime has a story. Every story has a truth.”Reports indicate that Vijay Sethupathi is also producing the series, which adds another layer of personal investment to the project. Kaattaan also features Milind Soman in a significant role, with sources describing the show as a character driven saga that explores the many versions of a man through the people whose lives intersect with his. This Rashomon-style storytelling approach suggests a narrative that blurs the line between folklore and lived reality. Every crime has a story. Every story has a truth.#HotstarSpecials #Kaattan | Coming Soon#SouthUnbound #JioHotstarSouthUnbound #JioHotstar #JioHotstarTamil#VijaySethupathi #AjithKumar #Balachandran #PradeepMilroyPeter pic.twitter.com/oG31pLUIa3 — JioHotstar (@JioHotstar) December 9, 2025 A return to longform storytelling Kaattaan signals Vijay Sethupathi’s full-fledged return to the web series format after his well-received turn in Raj and DK’s crime thriller Farzi. While he has headlined numerous films across languages during the past decade, longform storytelling is not new territory for him. Long before he became one of Tamil cinema’s most recognisable performers, he played the character Bharani in the Sun TV serial Penn in 2006.However, Kaattaan marks his first lead role in a Tamil streaming series at a time when the digital space is thriving with complex narratives and ambitious craftsmanship. With Manikandan at the helm, known for his grounded filmmaking and soulful writing, the pairing promises something rooted yet unpredictable. Manikandan’s ability to extract emotional truth from ordinary lives and Sethupathi’s instinct for characters who straddle moral greys make this collaboration one of the most exciting ones on the horizon. The world of Kaattaan and what lies ahead Although the makers have not shared character details or plot specifics, what is known so far hints at a world shaped by folklore, crime, and shifting identities. The title was earlier Muthu Engira Kaatan and the new version suggests the creation of a larger mythos built around the central figure.JioHotstar has stated that the series will arrive soon, though an exact launch date is still under wraps. The platform’s promotional push indicates that the show will be one of the key titles anchoring its upcoming lineup. For Vijay Sethupathi, Kaattaan arrives in the middle of an especially busy phase. He has Train with Mysskin gearing up, Arasan with Vetri Maaran and Silambarasan TR lined up, and a yet to be titled film with Puri Jagannadh in the works. Each project sees him explore widely different worlds, and Kaattaan appears to sharpen that versatility even further by placing him at the centre of a morally charged, multi perspective drama. If the first look is any indication, the series is shaping up to be a raw and compelling deep dive into the violent heart of a man whose legend shifts depending on who tells the story. Also Read: It’s a Wrap for Vijay Sethupathi and Puri Jagannadh’s Film。 Applications for U.S. unemployment benefits fell to their lowest level in eight months last week as businesses continue to retain workers despite elevated interest rates meant to cool the economy and labor market.Jobless claim applications fell by 13,000 to 198,000 for the week ending Oct. 14, the Labor Department reported Thursday. That's the fewest since January and about 14,000 fewer than analysts expected.Jobless claim applications are considered a proxy for layoffs.Despite the low level of weekly first-time jobless benefit applications, the number of Americans remaining on the unemployment rolls — known as “continuing claims” — jumped to its highest level in three months.Overall, 1.73 million people were collecting unemployment benefits the week that ended Oct. 7, about 29,000 more than the previous week and the most since early July.Analysts suggested one reason why new applications for unemployment aid might be falling while the number of people who continue to receive benefits is rising: Though relatively few people are being laid off, those who are already unemployed may now be having a harder time finding new work.“That would be consistent with other recent anecdotal evidence, including the Beige Book yesterday, which noted that firms were hiring ‘less urgently’ and finding that the pool of available job candidates was expanding,” said Nancy Vanden Houten, an economist at Oxford Economics. That comports with recent data showing that more people have started looking for work again. In August, about 736,000 people re-entered the search for employment, boosting the unemployment rate from 3.5% to 3.8%, where it remains today. Only people who are actively looking for a job are counted as unemployed.Though the Federal Reserve opted to leave its benchmark borrowing rate alone at its most recent meeting, it is well into the second year of its battle to rein in persistent inflation. The central bank has raised its benchmark rate 11 times since March of 2022, with part of its goal to cool hiring and bring down wages. But the labor market has held up better than expected. In September, employers added 336,000 jobs, easily surpassing the 227,000 for August and raising the average gain for each of the past three months to a robust 266,000.In August, American employers posted a surprising 9.6 million job openings, up from 8.9 million in July and the first uptick in three months.Besides some layoffs early this year — mostly in the technology sector — companies have been trying to retain workers.Thursday's report also said that the four-week moving average of claims — which flattens out some of the week-to-week volatility — ticked down by 1,000 to 205,750.。
